Using piAccess Link

Making and accepting connections

piAccess Link has two modes of operation. It can initiate a connection to a remote device (outgoing) or accept connections from a remote device (incoming). By default, as shown in the main application view below, piAccess Link is enabled to operate in both modes.

Making a connection to another device

In order to start a connection to a remote device (usually to a PC or Mac) press the Connect button or select Connect from the Options menu. The first time you do that the Available Devices window pops up and from there you can select the device to which you wish to connect. The selected device is then browsed in order to discover the available serial port services. In the example below the device PC has two Bluetooth serial ports available.

Select the serial port service you wish to connect to and press Connect to a service or in Series 60 devices select Connect to service from the Options menu or just press down the jog dial. piAccess Link will then establish the connection to the selected service and wait for the remote device to accept the request.

When connected, piAccess Link switches to its main view indicating that it is connected and stating the device name that is connected to. You are now ready to access your phone's SMSs and contacts using the phone manager of your choice!

When piAccess Link connects to a device it keeps its address and port number and the next time you select Connect you will be asked if you want to connect to the cached device. If yes, the connection establishment will start immediately, otherwise you will have to take all the steps described above.

Accepting incoming connections

piAccess Link can also accept connections from remote devices, such as a PC or a Mac. How to connect to piAccess Link depends on the operating system and the phone manager application you're using. For more on that please look here and also our FAQ pages.

When a device is connected, piAccess Link states that in its main view as shown below. In this case the device name will always be Remote which means that a remote device has connected to piAccess Link service. At any time the connection can be terminated by pressing the Disconnect button or selecting Disconnect from the menu.

The incoming service is optional and if a user desires so it can be disabled. To do that, from the Connections menu select Disallow Incoming. The main view will change to reflect that. When the service has the status Not Listening piAccess Link will not be discoverable and incoming connections will not be accepted. By default incoming connections are allowed.

Both ways of connecting, incoming and outgoing, offer the same level of functionality, speed and security. It is up to the user to decide which one fits better his/her needs.
