How do I set-up a Bluetooth virtual serial port on Mac OS x 10.4.x (Tiger) ?
On Tiger, in most cases, when you set-up a new Bluetooth device, Apple's Bluetooth software creates an outgoing Bluetooth virtual serial port, to connect to that device, if that Bluetooth device offers a serial port service. The name of each virtual serial port created by Tiger, is selected based on the name of the services advertised by the phone.
In order to use piAccess Link with Tiger, make sure you have loaded and run piAccess Link prior to pairing your phone with Tiger. If you don't do that then you will have to first run piAccess Link (and allow for the scanning of messages to be completed) and then re-pair your Mac with your phone.
Creating an outgoing Bluetooth virtual serial port
- To edit a device's Bluetooth serial port, or add a new outgoing port click on the Devices pane.
- Then select the device from the list and click Edit Serial Ports.
- By pressing the + button, you will be able to add a new Bluetooth virtual serial port.
Note: The Device service will only give you a list of the port types that has already scanned on your phone during pairing. If you wish to add a port to connect to piAccess Link make sure to do the pairing after you run piAccess Link (and wait for the scanning of messages to complete). Otherwise you will have to re-pair your Mac with your phone.
Creating an incoming Bluetooth virtual serial port
If you want from piAccess Link to be able to initiate connections to your Mac, then you will need to add an incoming Bluetooth virtual serial port.
- To do this go to the System Preferences and click on the Sharing pane of Bluetooth Preferences.
- Click on the Add Serial Port Service, then enter a name and select any options for the port.
Note: that you may control whether the Bluetooth virtual serial port will be active or not, by clicking Stop or Start Serial Port.
- If you wish to remove a Bluetooth virtual serial port, select it in the Service Name list and click Remove Serial Port Service.
