Fail to download SMS from a P800 using FMA

Reported by: bb Owned by: dp

Description

We are trying to download about 900 SMSes from a P800 to FMA 2.1.3.99.R143

We're using the piAccess Link we downloaded from ticket #31 as the normal version would crash with a 'Reason number 3' as described in ticket #31

Using the binary from ticket #31 we were able to connect, and start to download message, but it disconnects somewhere between 100-200 messages, not always at the same message.

I'm attaching a log file from FMA.

Any help would be appreciated.

We did try version 2.0 of FMA as well with the same problem

It seems that during the SMS download process the connection between piAccess Link and FMA is dropped. FMA's log doesn't provide any other valuable information at this point.

Perhaps we can get more meaningful data out of Link's logs. In order to enable logs you will have to create this directory: C:\Logs\SmsBackup\. A log file named log.txt will then be created the next time you run the application. Using SMan or similar app, you can beam that to your computer so that you can easily copy/paste it to this ticket.

Thanks.

A bit more information coming out of the log but still not sure if it's Link's fault that the BT connection is dropped. Can you try using the attached SIS file? I've added some more logging information which may provide more insight.

Attached is the new log. Just for your info, tried connecting it to a Mac and it failed part way through downloading the messages as well.

It also fails to part way through connecting in FMA sometimes as well, even before you try and download the messages.

OK, from the logs so far it doesn't seem that there is an error in the Sms reading process. This is also implied by the fact that it stops on different SMS each time. Is that still correct?

Something in the connection goes wrong (weak BT signal or weak battery?) and is dropped part way. If you may I'd like you to try another thing. Connect to Link from a terminal (such as Hyper Terminal in Windows). Use the same COM port to connect as the one used by FMA. When you do, type at+cmgl=1 in the terminal window. Your SMSs (in PDU format) will be read. Let's see how far it goes without a phone manager in the way.

Thanks for your help,

Connecting with hyperterminal and using the at+cmgl=1 command you suggested fails in similar way to downloading message with FMA. It dies at a random point part way through, at 297 messages once, 402 another.

I'm connecting at 115200, 8N1, with no flow control. Does Flow control matter? The mobile is plugged into AC power and the bluetooth receiver is only about 10 CMs away from the mobile.

Are there any good utilities for converting these messages into ASCII?

Changed 5 years ago by dk

There is an online converter between PDU and text format here. It's worth trying to see what the last (or the one after it) message each is in each case, there may be some common feature that is a hint to the underlying problem.

No, flow control shouldn't matter although mine is set to hardware. You might want to try that, just in case...

For individual messages, the online tool mentioned above is a good one. If you want to convert the whole lot, then our own piAccess Mail? can do this for you. It will read the messages from the phone and convert them to email messages ready to be downloaded from any email program. Since you're already registered you can get a fully functional 20-day trial license.
