Installation security error on Nokia N70

Reported by: Plonker Assigned to: dp (accepted)
Component: Link Version: Link-1.1
Severity: major Keywords: security installation
Cc: davecperry@hotmail.com

Description

I can't install piaccess Link on my Nokia N70. I have purchased the full version.

I'm using the Application Installer in PC Suite (6.80.21).

When I try to install I get this error message on the phone "Installation security error. Unable to install."

I get the same error message when I try to install the licence.

Is there a work around for this problem?

I'd really like this to work - so I get back the phone book display on the Bluetooth car kit in my car (it worked 100% with my previous Nokia 6230).

This could be because your phone is locked by the network operator and won't let you install applications which are not signed and their supplier cannot be verified during installation. Is your phone subsidised? Are you aware if it's your network operators' policy to not allow installation of "unauthorized" applications?

Another thing you could try, is to install the application using Bluetooth and not the Nokia PC suite. Try beaming the SIS from the PC to the phone.

I'm not aware of the policy of Vodafone (my network operator) regarding installation of unsigned applications. However, I have been able to install several applications such as PTT and Opera browser.

Is my phone subsidised? Apart from the very small number of SIM-free phones sold in the UK, the vast majority (mine included) are subsidised.

I don't see how beaming the SIS from the PC to the phone will make any difference? I use a Bluetooth connection with PC Suite and the error message is on the phone not in PC Suite - so how would the phone tell any difference??? I will try it, but I will be VERY surprised if it makes any difference (I hope to be proven wrong though!!!).

hi there,

What happened with some Voda UK S60 phones is that they have explicitly set the Application Manager (aka installer control panel) to not accept to install by default SIS files that have not been signed. To make things more interesting they have only chosen to do so for some phones only.

What you'll need to do is go to the application Manager and change the settings to allow unsigned applications to be installed.

The steps you need to take for altering the app manager setting in order to allow unsigned apps to install, are the following:

Applications Manager-> Options->Settings-Software Installation Settings-> ON (other options there are Signed Only and OFF)

Hope that works for you.

I changed the Applications Manager settings as suggested - and it now installs OK. Thanks.

But .... (isn't there always a but!) ccAccess Link doesn't see the Audi Bluetooth kit as a device (even when my N70 IS paired with it), so it won't enable the OBEX functionality. So it appears that ccAccess Link won't do what craigyb and I want - to provide a means of the N70 (and similar Symbian phones) to share their phones books with a car bluetooth kit. Many non- Symbian Nokia phones like the 6230 DO provide this functionality.

Hello again,

We have recently been looking into making piAccess Link interoperate with the Audi Bluetooth kit. Since we couldn't find much info on the web about the kit we were wondering if you would care to do some more testing on our behalf. We already have some indications that Link may be able to work with the kit and we just need to verify that.

From your last post we understand that you tried to connect to the kit from the phone and Link was unable to find the Bluetooth kit. Do you mean by that, that the kit was searchable but no services were available to connect? You can have a look at this section of the manual to understand what I mean with "available services to connect to".

Is it possible to have the car kit connect to piAccess Link? In other words initiate the connection the other way around, from the kit to the phone.

Thanks for your help.

Ok, we know it is possible as another company has provided a product for Windows Mobile phones, and it is compatible with the Audi kits.

I don't know if you could talk to these people or not, but it might help you provide a solution.

What piAccess Link does is that it offers this functionality on a port other than the standard ones that are already occupied by the built-in Symbian OS DUNP and HFP services. The Audi kit needs to allow the user to select which service to connect and not go a default one as it does. If those services are not build in there by MS then anyone can pretend to offfer thats ervice, similarly one could kill that service and replace it, something that is nasty and that we won't do on Symbian OS of course.

We will have a look againa t this product, in the mean time if one of you wants to help test this on an audio please say so :-)

If you can create some beta versions I'm more than happy to try them out on my Nokia N70 and Audi RS4.
